Proficiency in art requires practiced technical skill, careful observation, a personal detachment from criticism while still being receptive to it, and the knowledge of the language of art, which is called “form.” Form is what the blog on this website is about.
I paint realistically, and I rely on visual principles I learned from copying the work of the great seventeenth century masters —Rembrandt and Rubens in particular. I also learned from teachers who showed me why the Old Masters are considered masters. My media are watercolor, pen-and-ink, gouache, and Photoshop —usually all of them in any one painting and in that order. Whether or not you practice art, I hope these blog posts give you some new ways of understanding it. Let me know! nansimages@cox.net |
